Some interesting facts behind one of Wapping’s most iconic developments –

New Crane Wharf

  • The Anchor and Hope was a Pub adjacent to New Crane Wharf until circa 1891
  • The remnants of a rare Air Raid Shelter sign from World War 2 is painted on the wall opposite the Porters Lodge.
  • In 1987 The New Crane Wharf warehouses were purchased for £6,000,000.
  • £30,000,000 later the first resident moved into the newly converted development in the summer of 1987.
  • Conran Roche Developed New Crane Wharf into the block it is today. The same company also worked on Butlers Wharf and The Design Museum.
  • Part of New Crane wharf was The Three Suns public House. It was built in 1880 and closed in 1986. It is now a wine bar and retailer called Victualler.
  • The music video for ‘Walking on Sunshine’ (Katrina and the Waves) was filmed in New Crane Wharf in 1985 before it was converted.
  • The underground car park is the deepest in Wapping and its lowest floor lies beneath sea level.
  • New Crane Wharf became home to many artists' studios in the 1970’s and 1980’s The semi derelict warehouse became an artistic community and hosted many exhibitions and events.
